There's a tempting logic behind "I'll study for two hours on Sunday and not think about it the rest of the week": if the total time invested is the same, why would spreading it out change anything? The short answer is that your brain doesn't work like a container that fills up based on minutes poured in. It works based on how many times, and how far apart in time, it re-encounters the same information. That's why the weekend cram session almost always loses to 15 minutes a day, even when the total hours match.
What actually happens when you learn a new word
In 1885 the German psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus published a study that's still widely cited today: he trained himself to memorize lists of nonsense syllables (made-up combinations like "wid" or "zof", chosen specifically to carry no meaning or association) and then measured how much he still remembered after hours, days, and weeks. It's worth being precise about what that study actually was, because online it often gets flattened into something bigger than it is: one subject (himself), artificial syllables rather than real words from an actual language, lab conditions far removed from how anyone learns a language today with an app or in a classroom. It isn't a physical law you can apply to any content with mathematical precision.
That said, the underlying pattern Ebbinghaus described, the so-called forgetting curve, has been observed and replicated in many different forms over the following 140 years, including with real language material: memory of something new drops fast in the first hours and days after you encounter it, then the drop slows down. If you never review that Turkish word or that Swedish phrase you learned on Monday, by the weekend you'll remember a small fraction of it. Not because your memory is bad. That's simply how memory works for anyone, for anything that isn't reinforced.
Why spacing reviews out beats cramming them together
This is where a second, related phenomenon comes in: the spacing effect. In short: if you need to review the same information several times, spreading those reviews out over time (a day later, then a few days after that, then a week later) produces stronger, longer-lasting memory than cramming them into a single sitting, even when the total number of reviews stays the same.
The intuitive explanation is that every time you retrieve something from memory after it has started to fade a little, that small effort of retrieval strengthens it more than reviewing it while it's still fresh would. Reading the same list of Turkish vocabulary twenty times in a row on Sunday afternoon takes almost no retrieval effort: the word is still sitting in short-term memory, so your brain isn't really working to find it. Reviewing it Monday, then Wednesday, then again the following week, each time with a little more effort to pull it back up, builds a memory trace that holds up over time. It's the same reason two students who study the exact same number of hours before a test usually get different results: the one who studied a bit every day for two weeks tends to outperform the one who crammed the night before, even at equal total hours.
How this actually works inside Kolay

Even five honest minutes a day, opened on your phone on the commute or in a queue, are enough for the algorithm to do its job: you don't need a formal study block, you just need the reviews not to skip for days in a row. Whoever manages to fit those five or ten daily minutes in, even on the busiest days, and saves the longer weekend sessions for things that genuinely need uninterrupted time (a grammar lesson, a reading dialogue, a session with the AI writing tutor), gets the best of both.
What if I miss a day?
This fear is worth addressing directly, because it's common and it's often the exact thing that makes people give up on the method entirely: no, missing a day doesn't undo your progress. The forgetting curve isn't a cliff you fall off at midnight on the day you don't open the app, it's a gradual decline. A well-built spaced repetition algorithm knows this and behaves accordingly: if you miss a review, it simply shows you that word again with a slightly shorter interval next time, maybe you'll have to work a bit harder to recall it. There's no streak to defend at all costs, no counter resetting to zero to make you feel like you failed. This is also part of why apps built mainly around streaks and notification anxiety teach less than they seem to: the real point was never "never skip a day", it's "come back often enough that the gap between reviews stays in the range where memory gets reinforced instead of wiped out". One skipped day here and there is well inside that range. Two weeks of silence isn't, but at that point the issue isn't the missed day, it's having stopped altogether.
Where the method runs out
It's just as important to be honest about the limits. Spaced repetition is excellent for vocabulary, for grammar rules you need memorized, for anything that breaks down into small units you can review one at a time. It won't, by itself, teach you to speak fluently. Knowing that "yardım" means help in Turkish because a flashcard resurfaced it at the right moment isn't the same as being able to build a sentence on the spot to ask for help in a shop in Istanbul. That takes something else: reading real dialogue, writing your own sentences, getting things wrong and being corrected, exposure to the language as it's actually spoken. Spaced repetition builds and maintains the raw material, the words and structures, but fluency comes from actively using that material, not just from remembering it.
